In the Spirit of National Day

National Day is celebrated every year in Malaysia on 31st August to commemorate the momentous occasion when the Federation of Malaya achieved independence from British rule in 1957.

On the 30th of August, Malaysia’s then Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman took to the Royal Selangor Club Padang, now known as the Merdeka square at 11.58pm and observed two minutes of darkness.

At the stroke of midnight, the Union Jack was lowered and raised with the Flag of Malaya. The morning after, Tunku Abdul Rahman read aloud the Proclamation of Independence, followed by seven chants of Merdeka, with the crowd at the square bellowing, following each chant.

The moment was considered to be one of Malaysia’s most memorable and significant points in history.

National Day shouldn’t be confused with Malaysia Day, which is celebrated on September 16 and declared an official public holiday since 2010.

Malaysia Day marked the day when Sabah, Sarawak, Singapore and Malaya joined together to form the federation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963, although Singapore has since become its own country.

Every year, Sutera Harbour Resort honours the historical day with its own National Day celebration. This year the celebration will be held on 16 August 2018 at the covered tennis court of Sutera Harbour Golf Marina & Country Club.

The event, themed Sayangi Malaysiaku, starts at 10am with parades by the armed forces and local authorities.

61 birds will be released to symbolise 61 years of independence of the country. There will be food and drinks for all those who attend and in house guests are most welcome to join in the celebration.
