No other fruit is as loved – and as hated – as the durians. There has never been a fruit so steeped in dichotomy. Weighing up to 7 pounds, encased in a thick thorny shell, and cursed with an atrocious odour, the fruit of the durian tree is also venerated as the “king of fruits.”
Unarguably the most popular fruit throughout Southeast Asia, durian is also banned in many public places.
For many in the region, the spiny, football-size fruit with the divinely custardy flesh is as much a cultural icon as it is a treasured, eagerly anticipated food.
Growing on trees in moist, tropical climates throughout Southeast Asia, durians have a limited season and an extremely short shelf life. The trees themselves, sometimes as tall as 130 feet, are pollinated by bats. Three to four months later, the fruit, each weighing several pounds, plummets down, already reeking with its characteristic aroma.
Because of the short duration of tasty ripeness, durians are expensive, and purchasing one is a solemn, smelly ritual: only by odour can one determine whether a durian is truly ripe.
Not surprisingly for so valued a fruit, all parts of the durian tree are used in folk medicine. The flesh itself is regarded as an aphrodisiac.
Most Malaysians somewhat adulate the durians and can’t seem to get enough of the potently odouriferous yet uniquely exquisite flesh.

There will be two sessions; session 1 begins at 3pm and ends at 6pm while session 2 begins at 7pm and ends at 10pm.
Guests are allowed to consume as many servings as they want but should there be any leftover on any plate, a fine of RM30 will be imposed.
